
What are common symptoms?
- Usually a gradual onset of back stiffness, most pronounced in the morning and after prolonged rest
- Weight loss (especially in the early stages) fatigue, tiredness, feeling feverish and night sweats are other symptoms
- Inflammation of the eyes (uveitis), bowel (colitis), and scaly skin lesions (psoriasis) can also be present
What are current treatments?
- Surgery is rarely required for AS
- Spinal injections for AS are generally not recommended
- Anti-inflammatory and biologic drugs are very effective especially in the early stages of the condition
